The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York has over 700 animals within its 43 acres of land. It is one of the few institutions that have been awarded the AZA accreditation which upholds the highest standards of animal care and guest experience. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo contains a number of exhibits that are informative and interactive for all ages to enjoy, including a traveling education program called Zoo to You.
Henry “Ted” Fox, the Zoo director, believes that zoos can make a difference in the way people treat animals and can inspire adolescents to care about the environment these animals are native to. Mr. Fox works with other AZA accredited zoos in a breeding program. This program prevents animals from being taken from their natural habitat to sustain exhibits and also guarantees the survival of endangered species. Through his efforts, the zoo has been extremely successful in becoming the main breeding program for Humboldt penguins. The zoo has also gained “green building” status and is constantly looking for ways to improve their facilities and exhibits.
